Pluses: The De Niro Scorsese combination. De Niro just terrorises in all ways possible - Body language, Accent, tatooed toned physique. The girl who plays the child of Nolte - Brilliant portrayal of a confused teenager. The Music - Apt for the genre.
Minuses: Climax could have been better. A remake,so not all credits can go to the team.
Planning to give small reviews for some of the good movies i ve been watching..
Let me start this with "Before the devil knows you are dead"
Movie: Before the devil knows You are Dead(2007) Pluses: Philip Seymour Hoffman's brilliant performance ably supported by the ones who play his father and his brother. Brilliant camera angles on mono/bi logues To top it all, the direction of the legendary Sidney Lumet at 84 yrs of age Minuses: Too much of voyeurism that makes this otherwise 'for all' film virtually not viewable for children.
A cricket match batting performance equivalent to Selvaraghavan’s work in Aayirathil Oruvan would read:
161-2 in 25 Overs;then an interval (read it rain interruption for cricket & read it brain hemorrhage in Selva’s case) ;then 203 all out in 44 overs.
I am not a big fan of reviewing films by splitting them into two halves. So the usual “First half wasOK,Second half was a bit slow” kind of comments irk me! But for this film,I think one cannot do justice to either halves while giving a verdict taking it as a single piece. And that is because the first half was extraordinary while the second half was dreadful-that is to put it mildly and more importantly, there seemed to exist no connection between the two halves of the film.
So let me get into the first half.
Reema Sen heads a team that is interested in finding the mystery behind the disappearance of Prathap Pothan in Vietnam. They take his archeologist daughter Andrea with them.Karthi and his fellows form part of the trip as helpers! The first half is all about the adventure ride the group undergoes in search of the archeologist. It has a lot of funny sequences and quite a few thrilling sequences to make it a gripping ride.
They encounter traps set by the cholans believed to have existed in their destination spot. In showing how they tackle these traps, there is action aplenty-Hollywood style and surprisingly convincing too. Taking cue from Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, the director has made a commendable job in bringing out an adventurous ride-the scene that shows how they deal with the quick sand is an elucidation.
The locations are not at all filmy. The tribes they encounter look real, the fight with the red tribes is absorbing, disturbing to an extent as well- This is not a film for kids for sure.
After overcoming several obstacles, the only ones to reach the destination are the protagonists. They suddenly hear voices, they get lost in hallucination, behave like zombies- You get dragged to the edge of your seat and the screen freezes to show INTERVAL.
Now to the second half.
The Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade journey abruptly ends and you are welcomed by a dark gloomy setup like in Indiana Jones and the Temple of doom when the three are held captives by the Cholans, who were believed to have gone extinct. A tattoo mark on Karthi’s back makes them doubt if he is one among them- a messenger they had sent to the Pandian’s place for espionage(!?!).Suddenly they find that it is not Karthi but Reema who is the messenger. And then the twist unfolds. The twist is unpredictable. I give him that. But, the purpose?! It doesn’t serve anything .There are a lot of unanswered questions in the second half – of the Why, What, How kind.
What do the killers accomplish by doing the holocaust. Of what significance is the idol?!
Why does the armed force cooperate to the cause of the enraged pandian descendants(only a few of them)
How does the hero escape? How will his journey continue when the troops have sealed the entire perimeter?
How does Reema Sen get supernatural powers if she is just an ordinary person as she explains in the commentary??
What on earth was the sequence involving the shotput throw (I couldn’t get a better name for it) trying to convey?! Criminal waste of ten minutes!!
As for the performances, Karthik does a neat job with spontaneous wits, emotions, stunts but if he has to move up the ladder he has to shed his Paruthi Veeran image. He still doesn’t seem to have got out of that mould. The industry is notorious for stereotyping. If he continues this way, his career will end short and sweet.
Reema Sen has been handled a big role and she shows wrath, shows she is a woman on a mission and nothing could just stop her from achieving it- be it the scenes she gets her guns out of the holster in typical Billa style or be it the scenes where she betrays the cholan people. But her lip sync is horrible to say the least.
Andrea doesn’t have much space. She is made a sitting duck. She performs adequately in the scenes she holds control.
Parthiban’s role is absolutely gibberish and to treat a seasoned artiste this way is disappointing. He gets a well built up intro and just when you think you are going to be treated by a nice performance, everything goes to fumes the moment you start realizing that the film is heading the wrong way.
One thing that stands out supreme through both halves of the film is GV Prakash’s music. Only two songs out of the six composed are part of the film.It has become a ritual for Selva to not picturise songs composed for his films. The victim was the solemn ‘Oru naalil vaazhkai’ in Pudhupettai. Here in AO, both the melodious numbers ‘Maalai neram’ and ‘Indha paadhai’ donot appear on screen. However, the songs that appear have been picturised well and that is a plus. The 'Adho andha paravi' remix is amateurish though. The background score is apt - The music in the ‘quick sand’ sequence in particular. There is a good score towards the climax as well - I really wonder how he was able to sit through to compose the background score for the lousy climax!
Ramji’s cinematography holds forte in the aerial shots and the stunt sequences. He is another big plus to the film.
Editing by Khola Bhaskar definitely needed to be better. There were some abrupt cuts. I might be wrong as I hear that the film has been butchered by theatre owners at will- Who wouldn’t take the privilege if the film doesn’t look sane!
Pats on the back for the producer for believing in such a different attempt and some slaps as well for not interfering in the filming as his interference would have definitely given a check on the wayward turn the film takes in the second half.
Finally to the director, I am not annoyed at him, for, he has attempted a new genre. I am just sympathetic that he has squandered a promising start. Selvaraghavan is a wonderful example to the fact that divergent thinking and lack of coherence are two sides of the same coin. He proved that in Pudhupettai with a good start and an unrealistic end. With Aayirathil Oruvan, he reiterates the same- on a bigger scale; He turns an action packed astonishing adventure ride into an awfully atrocious raid on the senses of the audience.
Naan Kadavul-one of the most expected movies for various reasons is finally out now and here’s a review.
Let me begin with the expectations of me that it didn’t live up to.
1. I thought it was going to be Arya in Kasi all the way. That was not to be.While the Arya part of this expectation did not suffer too much, the Kasi part definitely did.
2. I had taken for granted that this film was going to revolve around the evolution of a person into an Agora-That is what the title and the pre release hype too suggested. But, the entire span of happenings in the film is about 1/100 th of the days taken for shooting it.
Now,the review.
Naan kadavul is all about a beggar faction and the anguish they suffer at the hands of a merciless businessman – if you could call him that and an agora who can do anything to slaughter the Dhushtan. The philosophy of Rudran’(Arya) s clan is that it has the right, infact responsibility to eradicate the sinners and also to help helpless souls from living a meaningless life. Rudran does exactly that when he is presented with such an opportunity in his hometown when he is brought back forcefully from his Kasi Agora camp.
There has been tremendous research made by the Bala contingent and it shows in the characters and the locations shown in the film. There has not been a film that has showcased beggars to an extent that this film has. The same could be said of the agori lifestyle at Kasi. The sequences shown in the Om Sivom song send shivers down one’s spine. It is a case of surreal realism that exists in the sacred mecca of Hinduism.
The fact that Bala has the uncanny flair to get both commercial and critical acclaim for his films is evident here too – with a few one liners where the audience react in unison. The scene where Rudran says ‘Ayushmaan bhava’ to the police is an elucidation to this point. The characters in the film too have a lot of realism about them that you don’t feel unconnected even though you are being treated by an entirely new subject.
Where he fails to score is the over exposure of the beggars to quench the thirst of slapstick lovers. The template – Use a character for comedy, brutalize the character in the end, create an emotional connection with the audience- which helped him in Pithamagan has failed to repeat the same here. You don’t get an emotional impact when the beggars are taken by the miscreants to Kerala. If that had been there, the rudra thaandavam that Rudran plays over the Malayalam speaking Villain would have enthralled one in an even bigger scale- Not that it didn’t. Anyway, when the same treatment is meted out to Amsavalli, your emotions come in and it is a treat to watch Rudran maul the main Villain.
One must feel for the villain after Pithamagan and Naan Kadavul-How many more times is he going to be mangled up in Bala’s films!!Anyway he needn’t care when he gets such meaty roles.
The climax was poetic in the manner that it brought out the philosophies of Rudran into action through the main character in the film-Amsavalli.Then,Rudran leaves back to his beloved institution and the frame freezes showing Arya in the background and his Guru in the foreground-Perfect end!
Now to the individual honours.Arya-By far the least luckiest of the current crop of actors(Not recognized even after a few good films that failed to click) seems to have got it his way this time. He has done a lot to his looks and body language and portrays Rudran at ease. It is vital to note that the film has been in the maing for 2 years but still his look in the film doesn’t change much-contrary to that of a few other actors. He does not have much dialogues to mouth. He has done a commendable job with a good dubbing modulation. The scene where the police officer jumps out of his cave when he shouts is an example.
Pooja as the beggar Amsavalli looks the part. It takes so much courage for a heroine to come out of the damsel image to do such a rusty role. She saves her best for the climax where she comes out with an extra ordinary performance and dubbing- The make up in the climax was very realistic and that has helped her cause.
All the other characters carry the Bala stamp and some of the wits that the beggars crack are enjoyable.Bala always seems to have a grudge on a particular caste that he never fails to show off in his films- The judge being the case in point here.
The stunts of Super Subbarayan are riveting – as they usually are in Bala’s films.
There are two behind the screen heroes in this film. The Director of Photography Arthur Wilson is one. He does everything to show Kasi as Kasi is. Also the locales and the angles used were breathtaking and pleasing. The darker scenes were captured in the dark and most of the comical scenes involving the beggars were shot outdoor-Sensible and neat work!
Now I come to the man behind Naan Kadavul. He lives throughout the film.He has done a 1000 films and still people doubt his longevity. Here he answers one and all. He adds soul to the proceedings right from where he comes up with the Sanskrit song in the initial credits. The songs ‘Om Sivom’ and ‘Pichai paathiram’ get the emotions out of you to praise the composer. It is so unfortunate that the songs ‘Amma un pillai’ and ‘Kannil Paarvai’ haven’t been picturised. The background music is even more mesmerizing and sends you to a state of ecstasy -I am not sure if these adjectives are enough. The music elevates the scenes- each and every one- to a higher pedestal.Well, he is a genius and let me stop here. His name is Ilaiyaraja! That’s that!
Verdict: Watch Naan Kadavul, praise the efforts–Definitely one of its kind.
